Rookeries
California sea lions can be found along the Pacific coasts. They are very social animals and can often be found in groups called rookeries, and rookeries can be pretty noisy places. Males would use the vocalizations in order to announce and defend their territory while females vocalize to identify their pups on the crowd beaches. She would vocalize and their pup will respond her call. Another way that sea lions identify themselves is through a breathe exchange. This looks like a sea lion kiss.

Fast swimmers
In the water, sea lions are fast and agile. Their flexible necks are also great adapations for catching the fast-moving fish that makes up their diet. All of these features make sea lions great predators, but they don't always play the role of hunter, sometimes they are the prey. Sea lions' primary predator is the Great white shark!

Life on Shore

While they spend most of the time in the water, during late spring and early summer, large groups of California sea lions come ashore and/or give birth on rocky and remote beaches.

Animal Info
California sea lions can be seen at the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, as well as the three city zoos.
